In 1943 British-Trinidadian Learie Constantine prebooked a room at the Imperial Hotel in Russell Square. He was turned away on account of his colour. Constantine challenged this decision in a landmark court case and won. In 1954, he published 'Colour Bar' to summarise his criticism of racial inequality, British colonialism and empire.
