-
Description
-
Grenada became independent in 1974. Public opposition to the rule of trade unionist Eric Gairy resulted in civil strife. On 13 March 1979, the socialist New Jewel Movement launched a bloodless revolutionary coup. They created citizen support initiatives including an adult literacy programme, with the aim of spreading grassroots democracy. The Centre for Popular Education’spoetry anthology captures the voices of ordinary Grenadians, their experience of revolution and hopes for a reformed society.
